For over 30 years, the Alliance for Multicultural Community Services (the Alliance) has helped to transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of refugees, immigrants and low-income residents in the Houston area. With approximately eighty staff members speaking over 22 languages, the Alliance facilitates successful refugee resettlement transitions and provides comprehensive services for all qualified Houston area residents striving to achieve self-sufficiency and independence, including ESL and cultural adjustment classes, case management, financial literacy, credit building, vocational training and a wide range of other support services.

Preferred Communities Case Manager

Position Title: Preferred Communities Case Manager
Reports to: Director of Health and Social Services and Program Coordinator
Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm

Temporary through September 2017

*This is a temporary full-time professional, exempt position, requiring a high degree of responsibility, autonomy and independent judgment*

The main focus of Preferred Communities (PC) program is to achieve the successful resettlement and integration of especially vulnerable groups of newly and recently arrived refugees. Preferred Communities Case Manager will provide intensive case management services that will result in these refugees’ attainment of self-sufficiency in their vulnerable life areas, which may include medical disabilities, trauma, and lack of access to supporting services.


  • Outreach potential program participants in a variety of manners
  • Enroll clients in Preferred Communities Program
  • Provide in-house orientation to cultural adjustment services 
  • Assistance with medical appointments and access to health care 
  • Assistance with health clinic orientation and transportation 
  • Health literacy and basic health topic workshops adapted for ESL learners 
  • Assistance with enrollment in public or private health coverage 
  • Educate refugee women on the Domestic Violence laws in the United States 
  • Conduct home visits and guide on parental involvement in schools 
  • Develop contacts with University of Texas Medical School/University of Houston School of Social Work and collaborate to provide health services 
  • Get trained in Crisis Intervention and able to conduct basic mental health assessment 
  • Refer clients to financial literacy and family literacy classes 
  • Refer clients to agency employment department for job readiness, placement 
  • Refer clients to the agency Education and Training department, including vocational training, multi-level ESL courses 
  • Refer clients to AMCS Employment Department for employment counseling, job readiness skills, job placements, and enrollment in Work in Texas. 
  • Refer clients to Dress for Success or Career Gear, nonprofit agencies who provide clients with access to job interview clothes 
  • Match clients with Mentors with the aid of the agency Volunteer Coordinator 
  • Assist clients with child care subsidies application process 
  • Maintain communication with Resettlement, RCA and Employment departments, and community service providers in conjunction with the Resettlement Manager 
  • Generate and submit monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual reports to the Program Manager 
  • Maintain files for each PC client 
  • Job development, training, placement, follow-up, and upgrade services 
  • Case file maintenance 
  • Ongoing cultural adjustment, employment, health, and fiscal counseling 


  • College degree or comparable experience
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software
  • Strong organizational, writing, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong ability to communicate in English
  • Fluency in Swahili
  • Computer skills in Word, EXCEL and ACCESS
