On August 20, Alliance for Multicultural Community Services hosted its annual Backpack and School Supply Drive, in partnership with the United Nations Association of Houston and ICNA Relief, to provide new backpacks and school supplies to refugee children in the Greater Houston Area.
Through generous donations, the number of students Alliance was able to assist has more than doubled, from 150 students in 2015 to more than 300 this year. Each child received a backpack stuffed with school supplies such as notebooks, paper and pencils.
Approximately 45% of refugees resettled by Alliance are youth under the age of 18. Each year this event helps refugee families prepare for the upcoming school year by providing students with essential school supplies, which many newly-arrived families cannot afford. Education is the key to success, and Alliance seeks to empower refugee youth by ensuring they have the tools necessary to flourish in school.
